Details: Primitive hand-hewn rooflines and authentic wood splitting
The Heritage Note
Sourced in the South of France, this deeply moving two-piece set is a beautiful testament to the quiet devotion of provincial folk art. It features an outer architectural "chapel" niche hollowed directly from a solid block of timber, alongside a separate, gracefully carved statue of a Madonna.
The beauty of this heirloom lies in its raw, unpolished authenticity. The wood has developed a darkened, rich patina over generations of gentle handling and exposure. When examining the unvarnished base of both pieces, one can clearly see the historic hand-planed tool marks, authentic (and long inactive) woodworm tracings, and original circular pegging holes—indicating these figures may have once been secured to a larger domestic altar.
Measuring 41 centimeters tall, the outer chapel creates a striking sanctuary of shadows, while the Madonna (25 centimeters) can be displayed inside the niche or resting quietly beside it. Together, they bring a grounded, primitive, and profoundly peaceful energy to the modern home.
