Details: Original wood backing and hanging hardware
The Heritage Note
A magnificent testament to mid-19th century romance, this brass repoussé cushion mirror—or miroir à parecloses—embodies the sculptural elegance of the Louis Philippe epoch. Its architectural presence is built upon hand-hammered, stamped brass sheets wrapped over wood, creating a multi-dimensional canvas of deep scrolls and bursting floral motifs.
We discovered this hidden treasure in a historic home within the Dordogne region, where it had watched decades of quiet country life pass by. It is crowned by an exceptionally high, pierced floral crest that draws the eye upward, while its classic 'cushion' border—composed of smaller angled glass mirrors surrounding the central pane—cleverly catches, splits, and multiplies the ambient light of a room.
Measuring 58 by 41 centimeters, the mirror retains its original dark wooden backing and historic hanging hardware, anchoring its structural integrity. Whether greeting guests above an entryway console or reflecting the soft glow of candlelight in an intimate dining room, it serves as a portal to the storied manors of old France.
