Napoleon III Cream Earthenware Pot
Details: Unmarked interior basin and handle molding
The Heritage Note
Dating back to the provincial quiet of the Napoleon III era, this extraordinary earthenware pot defies the expected. While many provincial pieces are famed for their vibrant yellow and deep green hues, this piece was finished in a highly unusual, luminous buttermilk cream glaze—a rarity that immediately distinguished it in the shadows of a rural estate.
Its silhouette is defined by two prominent, horizontally molded lug handles—often referred to affectionately by French antiquarians as "ears." Measuring a substantial 30 centimeters across these handles, it was historically designed for the heavy, practical lifting of the harvest season. Today, those same lines offer a distinctly sculptural, architectural elegance.
Standing at 23 centimeters tall, it is a magnificent anchor piece. Whether holding a dramatic, sprawling arrangement of olive branches or standing completely unadorned on a kitchen island, it brings the grounded, storied warmth of a 19th-century French chateau directly into the modern home.
